The first recordings for the record company "La Voce del Padrone – Columbia – Marconiphone" date back to 1933. For "Odeon – Carisch" the choir recorded from 1947 to 1959. For "RCA Italiana" it recorded from 1960 to 1996, when the recording activity was organized by the SAT Choir Foundation, which provided the publication of its repertory too.

The latest discography (produced by the Foundation mentioned above) is shown on this page. From here you can go to CDs pages which permit you to listen to parts of songs in MP3 format.

CORO SAT 70 ANNI

The Sat Choir Foundation took the place of RCA Italiana (later BMG Ariola – Bertelsmann German group) in 1996. It thus became editor and producer of all its phonographic recordings. The first one is a double CD issued in occasion of the choir 70 th anniversary. One contains the new edition of the first recordings (1933 – 1938), which were directly taken from the original 78 revolutions Columbia records (twenty-six folksongs altoghether). The other, recorded in 1995, includes twenty-one folksongs: along with the most known and traditional ones there are some brand-new ones like "Belina come te", "La Testa Malcontenta", "Isaira la si veste", "Un Anello d'oro fino" and some others.

'NDORMENZETE POPIN

It is the single version of the second CD contained in "CORO SAT 70 ANNI". Its title recalls the last harmonization made by Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, which was first recorded in 1938 and is here reproposed as a new and more brilliant performance.

SERAFIN

Folksongs harmonized for the SAT Choir by Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli.

This CD was reviewed by Amadeus magazine (n.6, June 1998) and included among the five best CDs of the year, in the category of "music of the 20 th century" (n.4, April 1999).

With it, the SAT Choir started the series of monographs, that is all those CDs dedicated to one single author. In this one in particular, all the nineteen harmonizations made by Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli are present. They sum up forty years of friendship and co-operation dedicated to the choir. They are extraordinary documents since they represent the only scores for male-choirs signed by such a great artist and are the evidence that the choir enjoyed his respect.

Gian Paolo Minardi writes about La Pastora e il Lupo : "You breathe an ancient air, which arouses from a melody drawn on a pentatonic scale. A peculiarity that Michelangeli suits to himself by colouring its cadenza such an archaic shade, thus recalling the Doric way. This folksong is harmoniously interwoven with a rich plot and its last hummed strophe emphasizes a charming chromatic descending movement of the bass voices which leads, before its archaic ending, to a rare suspended cadenza".

ANTONIO PEDROTTI

Folksongs

Starting from the spontaneous harmonizations made by ear by the young choristers Antonio Pedrotti was, along with Luigi Pigarelli, one of the first musicians to work on the early SAT Choir repertory. His musical experience, his sensitivity and his mountain spirit passed onto his works, which were enthusiastically accepted by the choristers. The forty-year co-operation with the SAT Choir resulted in more than forty harmonizations. The last one, Sui Monti Carpazi , was created in 1974, one year before his death. This CD contains twenty-four folksongs. Among them some rarities, like The River of no Return , which was the soundtrack of a famous American film, starring Marilyn Monroe and Robert Mitchum (1953).

CANTI DEGLI ALPINI

Even though this CD isn't a monograph, it is worth being included in this series because its theme is monographic. As a matter of fact it is a collection of the Italian Alpine Troops' songs. During World War II Mario and Silvio Pedrotti, back to military service, were ordered to train the choirs of Valfassa and Trento battalions. During that experience, the two brothers got in touch with other soldiers' folksongs coming from different alpine areas. Later, they were handed out to Luigi Pigarelli, Antonio Pedrotti, Andrea Mascagni and Renato Dionisi who worked on them until they could be considered worth becoming part of the choir official repertory.

This edition, recorded in 2000, includes eighteen folksongs.

RENATO DIONISI

Folksongs

This CD was reviewed by Amadeus magazine in August 2005.

In 1950s Renato Dionisi not only joined Luigi Pigarelli, Antonio Pedrotti and Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, but led the choir towards a stylistic evolution. Among his forty-two harmonizations, the first and most famous one was Ninna Nanna , which is still one of the most performed by the choir as well as one of the most asked for an encore by the audience. His last one, made in 1999, was a harmonization of an old Istrian song, La viecia batana , which reminded him of his childhood in Rovinj ( Istria ). The CD, recorded in 2003, contains nineteen folksongs.

“These nineteen folksongs are part of the vast repertory of several professional and amateur choirs, but the SAT Choir is able to perform it flawlessly, once more showing the huge potentialities of human voices…" (signed A.B. – Amadeus, August 2005 – year XVII, n.8).

SERENADA A CASTEL TOBLIN

Luigi Pigarelli and the SAT Choir

This double CD was reviewed by Suonare News magazine (February 2006, n.114).

It contains two CDs recorded between 2004 and 2005 and is dedicated to Luigi Pigarelli, the first and most important harmonizer of the SAT Choir. Being part of it from the very beginning allowed him to leave his mark on the repertory, making the most of the choristers' peculiar, expressive voices. He harmonized ninety-four folksongs. Forty have been chosen for these two CDs to represent the importance the author had from a historical and musical point of view.

“…the new recording of the repertory is worth attention, because Mauro Pedrotti's style is rich in personality…

…it is clear that eighty years haven't been spent in vain. Guarding the folk tradition doesn't mean performing with no variations. In other words, those who miss Silvio's conduction with his picturesque imagination, his extreme rythms ( sometimes pounding, sometimes strictly kept back), his both naif and cultured style will nevertheless found out that the elegance, the intonation, the precise and rational phrasing that these clean recordings show are to be seen as a proper classic style for mountain choirs too".
